GRANTS - The Grants Pirates and Lady Pirates basketball teams are on the road today through Saturday for the Al Armendariz tourney in Santa Fe.
The Pirates unfortunately started off the Tourney with a loss to the Farmington Scorpions, who had previously not played a game this season.
With the loss, Grants (1-1 overall) will play Kirtland Central, which opened up its season with a 69-32 loss to Navajo Prep before losing to Pojoaque Valley, also on Friday. The Pirates and Broncos play at 9:30 a.m Friday.
The Lady Pirates, meanwhile, are 0-1 on the season with a loss to the Bloomfield Lady Bobcats in their season opener, 47-30. The Lady Bobcats are now 4-0 on the season.
The Lady Pirates will start the tourney off with the Hobbs Eagles who are 2-1 on the season, and the defending state champs. If the Lady Pirates were to win they will play either Santa Fe Indian School (2-2). The Braves have beaten the Crownpoint Eagles (1-2) and they have also beaten Academy for Technology and The Classics (1-2). They have lost to the Bernalillo Spartans (1-2) and they have also lost to Espanola Valley (3-2).
So as you can see, the Lady Pirates have a possible chance to win and make it to the championship but they have a tough schedule in front of them.
